KUALA LUMPUR, (Bernama) -- The government plans to build two more radar stations in the Straits of Melaka to increase surveillance and enforcement along the stretch of water.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said the two radar stations would be built in Pulau Jarak, Perak, and Pulau Perak, Kedah.

"Currently, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has nine radars in the Straits of Melaka which carry out surveillance and relay information to the agency's vessels and patrol boats on other boats which raise suspicion.

"However, there are areas in the Melaka Straits that are not covered by the nine radars," he said to a question from Datuk Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim (BN-Baling) on the safety of Malaysian fishermen along the waterway.

To a supplementary question from Abdul Azeez, Shahidan said among the hot spots in Malaysian waters was about 100 nautical miles from Tok Bali, Kelantan which was often encroached by Vietnamese fishermen as it was a rich fishing ground.

"This area requires round-the-clock monitoring also because of the piracy problem there. Some foreign fishermen remain in the waters of their own country in the day time and enter Malaysian waters at dusk," he said.

To a supplementary question from Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan (PAS-Kota Bharu), Shahidan said 508 foreign fishing boats were fined a total of RM220 million since 2008 for encroaching Malaysian waters.

He said 70 of the fishing boats were from Thailand, 223 from Vietnam, 164 from Indonesia and the rest from Singapore, Brunei and the Philippines.
