Boeing Defence Australia and partner Thales Australia have been selected as preferred tenderer to provide a new helicopter training system to meet the future rotary-wing training needs of the Australian Defence Force (ADF), well-informed sources disclosed to IHS Jane's on 7 January.

Official confirmation was not immediately available, but the sources said the three shortlisted tenderers for Air 9000 Phase 7 - Australian Aerospace, Boeing Defence Australia and Raytheon Australia - were advised of the government's decision on 6 January.

Army and Royal Australian Navy (RAN) students will be trained from 2017 in Nowra, New South Wales, under the framework of the Helicopter Aircrew Training System (HATS) programme, which is valued at up to AUD1 billion (USD900 million).
